The Living Proof: How Science and Support Saved Pat Byrne

In March 2021, at the height of the pandemic, Westmeath man Pat Byrne noticed a lump and went to his GP. The news was devastating: he was diagnosed with stage four blood cancer.
Pat fought bravely through eight months of grueling chemotherapy. At first, it looked like it was working. But final scans revealed the heartbreaking truth that the cancer had resisted treatment. Additional therapies failed too. Pat was running out of time and options.
Then came a historic breakthrough
A Medical First in Ireland
In December 2021, St. James’s Hospital in Dublin became the very first adult hospital in Ireland to deliver CAR-T cell therapy. This groundbreaking process works by harvesting a patient’s own white blood cells, sending them to a specialised lab to be genetically modified and re-infusing them to aggressively track down and destroy the cancer.
Pat Byrne became the second adult in Ireland to ever receive this pioneering therapy.
The results were nothing short of a miracle. Pat is now the longest-surviving patient to undergo the procedure out of 150 people who have benefited from it at St. James’s to date.
“I was in the right place, at the right time, under the right people,” Pat says. “I’m in complete remission, living my life to the full.”
Why Your Awareness and Donations Matter
Pioneering treatments like CAR-T give patients a second chance at life, but the journey requires immense medical, emotional, and physical support.
The Bone Marrow for Leukaemia Trust is a vital lifeline behind these medical milestones. Every single euro raised helps the Trust:
- Support the Ward: Funding the specialised equipment and staff needed to deliver advanced therapies safely.
- Provide Free Accommodation: Managing seven dedicated apartments near St James’s Hospital, allowing families to stay together completely free of charge during weeks of intensive recovery.
- Fund Life-Saving Research: Investing in next-generation research so more Irish patients can survive advanced blood cancers.
